The intent

The brief asked for the building to “stand out at night”. The scheme argues the opposite: at 4.2 cd/m² average façade luminance the building sits below the commercial frontage opposite, and reads as calm rather than loud. Standing out was achieved by contrast with the context, not by output.

The constraints that shaped it

Environmental zone E3 capped façade luminance at roughly 25 cd/m² — not binding here, but the vertical illuminance limit at the residential block to the north was. That single receptor determined the aiming of the entire upper tier.

A 23:00 curfew meant the scheme had to be designed twice: a full evening state, and a reduced state that keeps the entrance and wayfinding legible while the façade layer switches off entirely.

No uplighting was possible at the base — there is no soffit or cornice to catch light that misses the wall, so anything aimed upward would have gone straight to sky. The base is lit downward from a concealed slot at the underside of the first-floor overhang instead.

What it taught

The mock-up changed the fixture. The first grazing sample at 200 mm offset made the masonry look flat; at 120 mm the course lines read properly. No calculation predicted that — only the sample on the actual stone did.

Internal light was the biggest lever. Coordinating the interior scheme’s evening state, so occupied floors read as warm and consistent, did more for the night image than any external fitting. That coordination has to happen at concept, not at commissioning.

The curfew state needed its own presentation. Shown as a designed condition it was accepted immediately. Had it appeared at handover as “the façade turns off at 11”, it would have read as a fault.
